Social Networking 1) Would the cost of becoming a member in one of the professional associations above provide more benefits than joining one of the free networking sites, such as LinkedIn or monster? What are those benefits? Yes, the costs of joining a professional associations networking site is worth the added cost due to several benefits. First and most significant is the opportunity to connect with professionals who often have years of experience in a given area of a profession. These professionals, many of them with twenty years or more of experience, often join these networking sites to share their expertise. Research of participation in social networks shows that altruism and the sharing of information is a very significant motivator for many experienced professionals (Bernoff, Li, 2008). Second, the professional contacts made in these specialized networks will often be invaluable over the span of a multi-decade career. The depth of insight these contracts can provide in specific areas will also be incredibly valuable; almost like having a board of advisors to call on at any time. Fourth, the ability to find new career positions and create a more effective path for ones one progression from one po sition to the next is possible using these networks.
